Ambode plans tech hub in Lagos

Ambode-Akinwunmi

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says plans are ongoing to transform the Sabo Industrial Estate in the Yaba area of the state to a technology hub and another Silicon Valley.

He explained that the hub would serve as a place where new set of entrepreneurs and innovators could be raised to address the challenges confronting the nation in the Information and Communications Technology sector.

Silicon Valley, which is in the San Francisco Bay area of California, United States, is home to many of the world’s largest high-tech corporations and thousands of startup companies.

Ambode, who spoke during an inspection tour across the state, said the government would actualise the plan of transforming Sabo to the new hub for technology in 2017 and assist the already established technology incubators in the area to achieve their full potential.

The governor, who visited some technology outfits in the area — Ardela, IDEA and CC Hub — said the government was desirous of assisting entrepreneurs in the ICT sector to grow.

He said, “Our government is seriously committed to assisting entrepreneurs like the ones here to be able to be good startups.

“We will use our Employment Trust Fund to support this concept here. All we need to do is to send people here and provide infrastructural support.

“Our aim is to create an enabling environment for our youths to thrive and be more creative and enterprising.”

A former Minister of Communications and Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, who was part of the tour, said the plan to scale up the industrial estate in Sabo signalled a new beginning for the technology sector.
