Arrested Suicide Bomber Claims To Be One Of Abducted Chibok Girls

A suspected suicide bomber intercepted in northern Cameroon yesterday claimed to be one of the over 219 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in the Nigerian town of Chibok in 2014.

According to military and local government sources, she made the claim before she could blow herself up when two of the girls carrying explosives were stopped by local self-defence forces in the village of Limani, in an area of northern Cameroon that has been the target of frequent suicide bombings in recent months.

The Boko Haram insurgents had in April, 2014 invaded the school in Chibok while the girls were taking exams, loaded over 2019 of them in trucks, just as about 50 of the girls were said to have escaped.

The two military sources, who preferred not to be named in print sincethey were not authorised to speak for the Army, confirmed yesterday that the girl who blew up herself had claimed to have been one of the Chibok abductees.

One of the military sources said, “One of them indeed declared that she is one of the Chibok hostages. She is around 15. We are now verifying, because on the Nigerian side they have the names and photos of these girls,”

“We need a few days to be able to confirm this information. We have to debrief all the men who were present and interrogate the two girls before we can say anything”.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army announced that its troops yesterday averted a suicide bombing attack in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital by killing two suspected female suicide bombers.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman, who explained that the tragedy was averted through the combined efforts Army troops and men of the Civilian JTF  who opened fire on the suspected bombers as they made their way into Maiduguri town.

Usman said, “The ever alert and vigilant troops of 7 Division Garrison based in Maiduguri, in conjunction with Civilian JTF averted yet another suicide attack on the innocent citizens in Borno State today. The troops intercepted two female suicide bombers at about 1.20am this morning, almost 100 metres south of Umurari village, outskirts of Maiduguri.

“However, one of the suicide bombers on sighting own troops detonated her explosive device, killing herself instantly, while the second bomber in an attempt to escape was gunned down by one of the Garrison snipers”, he stated.

The statement further noted: “The combined team of Nigeria Police and Nigerian Army’s Explosive Ordinance Device team safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices strapped on the gunned down suicide bomber.

“It is important to state that there was no casualty beyond the two suicide bombers. Presently, the troops and the Civilian JTF deployed in the village are now combing the general area to forestall further breach of security”, the Army Spokesman declared.
