The Nigerian Senate will no longer today, December 8, begin the confirmation hearing on the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to Leadership, the Senate had on Wednesday, December 7, announced that it will begin the screening of Magu and four other member-nominees of the commission on Thursday after about five months of their nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Some forces within the Presidency spare said to be against Magu’s emergence as the EFCC’s chairman and the Department of State Service (DSS) is also said to be a collaborator in the scheme to edge out the anti-corruption czar through a damning security report it has sent to the Senate against Magu.

The Senate’s Order Paper of today, obtained by Leadership did not reflect the much-anticipated screening exercised contrary to the earlier announcement.

Magu was appointed in acting chairman of the anti-graft agency in November 2015, but his confirmation has been shrouded in controversy as some power brokers are reportedly opposed to his confirmation.

Senators had earlier demanded that senate president Bukola Saraki release status report of the Department of State Service (DSS) on EFCC boss and let the upper legislative chamber move ahead to confirm his appointment.
