Just as Nigerians are groaning under the heavy weight of the economic recession, some federal lawmakers in the House of Representatives have paid themselves hundreds of millions of Naira as accommodation allowances.

According to suspended Kano lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin, Speaker Yakubu Dogara of the lower house of legislature and his deputy Lasun collected N500m ‘from multiple sources’ as their accommodation allowances. Jibrin made these allegations on his Twitter handle on Monday, October 17 even as he revealed that the allowances caused friction among members of the House.

He said: ”On day 88 of DOGARAGATE: At a time of recession when Members of House and ministers collect a paltry sum per annum for rent of official House “Speaker Dogara and Lasun collected 500m naira from multiple sources in the name of “we no get official house “for rent of Houses and guest houses” READ ALSO: Alert! The ethics and privileges committee passed the verdict on Tuesday, October 11 in a report submitted to the House of Representatives. Recall that on June 9, 2016 the US ambassador to Nigeria, James Enwistle accused three members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Mohammed Gololo (AP-Bauchi); Mark Gbillah (APC-Benue) and Samuel Ikom (PDP-Akwa Ibom) of sexual misconduct while in the US.
