The minister of aviation has vowed to resign if the Abuja Airport runway is not completed within the estimated period

The minister of state for aviation Hadi Sirika has vowed to resign if the repairs on the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport runway is not completed in six weeks.

Sirika said one reason he would resign is because his reputation is at stake.

Speaking on Monday, March 27, Sirika also debunked reports that there would be an 18-week extension on the runway repair.

He said: “I am very comfortable that we will be able to meet the targeted six weeks.”

‘’We have a guarantee that it will be done. I will resign if the closure of the runway goes beyond six weeks. My reputation is at stake,” Sirika said.

We gathered that the minister said studies and consultations were done before the Kaduna Airport was chosen as an alternative to Abuja Airport.

He said the federal government also gave a go ahead order on the repairs for March.

The minister noted that after series of extensive consultations with Nigeria Meteorological Agency NiMET, which made available rain prediction, for the period chosen, the government approved works on the runway.

Also speaking, the minister of information Lai Mohammed said: “Since the closure, we have met with transport and aviation correspondents in Abuja and have jointly undertaken a tour that took us by train from Abuja to Kaduna, visited and witnessed operations at Kaduna Airport and then returned to Abuja by road.”

Recall that Julius Berger, the contractor handling the Abuja Airport repairs had earlier said that the project is 40% completed.

The construction company also promised not to exceed the April 19, deadline given.
