NYSC sets up panel to unravel members’ death

NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has denied allegation of negligence in the recent deaths of some corps members in Zamfara, Bayelsa and Kano states.

To this end, the Director General of NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure, has set up a committee to unravel the immediate and remote causes of their deaths.

Elechi Chinyerum Nwenenda, Oladepo Ifedolapo and Asuquo Ukeme Monday, died during the ongoing 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara states, respectively.

A statement by the DG said: “Management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss of the corps members.”

Kazaure insisted that the impression created in some quarters that their deaths were as a result of negligence was not true.

He explained that “the deaths followed brief illnesses, after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures.

“While we mourn the demise of these corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters.

“Management wishes to state that the welfare of Corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard.

“The policy of the scheme regarding heal-thcare during orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified doctors and other corps health personnel.

“The clinics are provided with drugs and other basic equipment, and are detailed to render round-the-clock services.”
