We don’t influence selection of obas — Mimiko

A few days to the expiration of his government, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, said his administration did not intervene in the selection of traditional rulers in any community in the state.

The outgoing governor noted that all the traditional rulers in the state were the choices of their people.

Mimiko stated this at the presentation of staff of office to the Olowa of Igbara Oke, Oba Adefarakanmi Agbede, held at the Anglican Grammar School, Igbara Oke, the headquarters of Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Thursday.

Represented by his deputy, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo, the governor explained that it was the practice of his administration to accept anyone chosen by the people as monarch.

He said, “The selection of the oba of any community is that of the people. The people speaks and the government accepts.

“Mimiko is a product of democracy and the rule of law. The people voted for him in 2007 and 2012 and now that the people have decided to look at the other side, that is what the people want.

“A town also gets an oba when they want one. So, the approval of the Ondo State Executive Council was based on the decision of the people to have an oba at this time and it does not matter whether the governor is leaving office tomorrow.”

Mimiko maintained that the endorsement of Oba Agbede by eight out of the nine kingmakers and the joyous atmosphere in the town since his emergence, showed that his (Agbede) choice was acceptable to the people of the town.
