We must remain united to honour fallen heroes – Ambode

Ambode-Akinwunmi

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday said the country must remain united in order to honour the fallen heroes who laid their lives for the unity of the country.

The governor, who spoke after performing the laying of wreath and release of pigeons in commemoration of the 2017 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, on the Lagos Island, said the celebration was in recognition of the sacrifice of the men who died to ensure the unity of the country.

He said, “Every January 15, we come together to remember our past heroes. The whole essence of being Nigerians is for us to live as a united country that some people have laid their lives for.

“It is important that we continue to celebrate those who died for this country and remind ourselves that the unity of Nigeria has no substitute.”

Ambode said the government had been prioritising the welfare of legionnaires in the state and recently increased their monthly subvention.

The Chairman of Nigerian Legion, Lagos State chapter, Col. Samuel Akande (retd.) commended Ambode for his continuous support for widows of fallen heroes and members of the association.

“He recently gave us N5m to take care of our widows and members. Not only that, he promised us two vehicles and he has given us one,” he said.
