Revelations continue to emerge concerning why former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the north during the 2015 general election.

Jonathan campaigned for re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while Muhammadu Buhari, a notherner, contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But the fact that Buhari is from the north may not just be only reason Jonathan lost as the Northern Nigeria Christian Politicians (NNCP) accused the former president as well as Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of failing to address its challenges.

Obasanjo was Nigeria’s president between 1999 and 2007 and is believed to have played a key role in the emergence of Jonathan as late Yar’Adua’s replacement against the wish of the north.

Leadership reports that the NNCP praised President Muhammadu Buhari for coming to its rescue where the two other former leaders failed.

Hon Keftin Amuga, the chairman of the group, was quoted as saying that for the first time, a Northern Muslim president would recognise the organisation as a political factor and force.

At a press conference, Amuga said: “this is a signal which could lead to the emergence of a truly united Northern Nigeria people, devoid of religious bigotry.

“Since the third republic, the Christian North has variously given its support to our Southern Christian brothers, the likes of Obasanjo and Goodluck to be president of Nigeria, but unfortunately, because they have limited knowledge and do not appreciate our challenges, they have variously failed to address the peculiarity of the northern Nigerian Christian population.

“This is in sharp contrast to what PMB promised and has done for the Christian north.”

He took a swipe at some northern Christian politicians, who, while seeking for political relevance, get involved in various alliances without directional focus.

“The body has observed that for more than half a century (56years) since Nigeria got her independence, the Northern Nigeria Christian politicians in spite of the demographic consideration never cultivated the required self confidence in the piolitical activities of Nigeria.

“Instead, the northern Christian politicians, while seeking for political relevance, got involved in several political alliances without directional focus and in consequence achieve no tangible result,” he said.
